One of my best friends from high school was visiting me a few months back and in the course of our many conversations, I had said something self-deprecating as my humor was oft to do, when Jessi said something, something that I will never forget. Jessi, with a straight face, said that she didn’t appreciate the way I was talking about her friend. Then she proceeded to tell me that when the temptation rises to be self-deprecating, she in turn says 3 nice things about herself and suggested I do the same. This exchange hit me in the feels.
As a mom, I have taught my kids that we do not abide bullies. Bullying and lying are my two major no goes, and they should always try to avoid both. So, when Jessi’s words made me realize I was bullying myself it was an awakening.
Since that day I have worked to pay better attention to how I am speaking of myself, and treating myself, as setting a proper example for my kids is one of my driving motivations each day. Admittedly I am far from perfect at either always being good to myself or setting the right example, but I also know that each moment of each day is another opportunity to try again. To be better.
